Dani’s 40th

A love letter in podcast form — the people who know her best, in their own words.

John and Dani together with their children at Dani's 40th birthday party

Dear Dani,

I wanted to bring together the people who know you best — your nearest and dearest — so you could hear, in their own words, what they see when they look at you. What you mean to them. How deeply you’re loved. And just how special a person you are to so many.

Over the last two years, you have been my rock in my darkest times. I genuinely can’t put into words how grateful I am for you — for your strength, your patience, your love, and the way you hold everything together even when it’s hard.

To see us in the moment with the kids at your amazing 40th party brings me pure joy. This picture was only possible with your belief and strength. Thank you.

Doing these podcasts has been a gift for me. I’ve learned more about you, seen you through other people’s eyes, and shed more than a few tears — of joy, pride, and love.

I hope you love watching this as much as the people in it love you.

Get the tissues ready… and enjoy.

With a little polish from Chad, naturally!

Isobel — Mum, Confidante, Best Friend

Isobel Bartlett is Dani’s mum — and, unmistakably, one of her closest friends. Their relationship spans childhood, independence, shared yoga journeys, motherhood, and now three generations living under one roof.

This conversation traces Dani’s life from early childhood through adolescence, sport, travel, adulthood, and motherhood. Isobel reflects on Dani as a high-energy, enthusiastic child; her remarkable netball journey to England Under-17s; her independence forged through solo travel; and her evolution into a compassionate, resilient adult. The discussion also explores the depth of their mother–daughter bond, how it matured into friendship, and Isobel’s pride in the woman, wife, and mother Dani has become. The episode closes with a gentle reframing of turning forty — not as a threshold of loss, but as continuity of a life well lived.

“Being 40 is just another day — you just need to carry on exactly as you are, because you are living your life wonderfully.”

Grace & Jude — What Mummy Means

This episode features Grace and Jude — Dani’s children — talking about their mum in the most honest, unfiltered way possible. They talk about the excitement of Mummy’s 40th birthday party: the dance floor, the magician, the dancing, the sweets, and practising a special dance together. More than the party, though, they describe what Dani is like as a mum every day — big hugs and kisses, being kind, fun, playful, and trustworthy.

This episode cuts straight to the core. No stories from the past, no reflections on growth — just two children describing love, safety, fun, and closeness. It shows Dani exactly how she is seen at home, in the moments that actually count.

“I love you, Mummy, and I like the things that you do with me.”

Sam — University Housemate Turned Lifelong Friend

Sam is one of Dani’s closest friends from university — they met in first year, lived together in second and third year, and stayed tightly connected across the big life shifts: grief, travel, health, motherhood, and the steady evolution into adult friendship that actually lasts.

Sam paints a brutally honest (and hilarious) picture of university life, then shifts into deeper territory: supporting Dani after her dad died, joining her in Vietnam for her birthday, and spending Christmas and New Year together. From there it moves into adulthood: shared values around wellbeing, yoga, and then motherhood — including Dani as a role model for parenting choices and practical survival wisdom. Sam’s core message for forty: Dani is deeply considerate of others — but she must trust herself and sometimes put herself first.

“Keep being the kind, caring person you are — but care about yourself sometimes too.”

Carla — Schooldays to Motherhood, Through Everything

Carla is one of Dani’s longest-standing friends, dating back to their teenage years around school and just after. Their friendship has carried through university years, early motherhood, personal loss, mental health challenges, and the everyday realities of adult life.

Carla reflects on meeting Dani through overlapping school friendships and bonding quickly over a shared, slightly savage sense of humour. She speaks about being the first in the group to have a child, and how Dani naturally stepped into a deeply involved, maternal role long before becoming a mum herself. Above all, Carla emphasises the depth of their friendship: being there for each other through grief, hardship, and growth, and the unshakeable loyalty Dani brings to the people she loves.

“She’s literally one of a kind — the most loyal person I’ve ever met, and someone who will always show up, no matter what.”

Jenna — From Primary School Playgrounds to Lifelong Sisterhood

Jenna is one of Dani’s oldest and most enduring friends — their friendship began in primary school when Dani moved to Marston Green and has run uninterrupted through junior school, secondary school, adulthood, and motherhood. This is a bond formed early and never loosened.

Jenna takes us right back to the beginning: playground games, sleepovers, sports days, school orchestras, and a shared love of performance. As life diverged into college, university, and adulthood, Jenna highlights something rare: a friendship that never kept score. Time apart never mattered — they always picked up exactly where they left off.

“Without that girl, I wouldn’t be the same person I am today.”

Jasmine — Sister, Best Friend, and a Constant Through the Big Moments

Jasmine is Dani’s younger sister. Because they grew up in different places and didn’t live together, their relationship formed through “concentrated” time — visits, holidays, milestones — and evolved from a classic big-sister/little-sister dynamic into a close adult friendship built on trust, humour, and reliability.

Jasmine describes Dani as one of the main women who shaped her: persistent, fierce in protection, and emotionally present. Their adult relationship is marked by constant contact — long voice notes, shared humour, and a sense that Dani adapts to whatever her loved ones need in each phase.

“I’m so lucky to have you as my best friend and my sister — and I hope you know how cherished you are.”

Tash — University Days and a Friendship That Lasted

Natasha is one of Dani’s closest university friends, first meeting her through netball in their first year. From the start, Dani stood out — confident, talented, and impossible not to notice.

This episode reflects the intensity of university life: netball, nights out, and shared survival through some hard moments. Their friendship went beyond partying — built on trust, loyalty, and being there for each other when things went wrong. Even after university, they stayed connected through visits, weddings, baby showers, and motherhood, with their lives often running in parallel.

“She is one of a kind — I don’t think I’ll ever meet anyone else like her.”

Jules — Family, Steady Presence, and a Mirror for Dani’s Growth

Julie has been in Dani’s life for around twenty years, entering through the wider blended family dynamic and becoming a consistent, trusted adult presence across multiple phases: young adulthood, family holidays, grief and change, and now Dani as a parent.

Julie reflects on the Cornwall holidays — the joyful chaos of the Bartlett dynamic — and Dave’s influence on Dani: his drive, work-focus, discipline, and love, and how Dani carries those traits while also embodying Izzy’s freedom and warmth. Julie’s most powerful example is Dani’s parenting: a moment with Grace and Stagecoach where Dani blended empathy with responsibility — a kind, human delivery of a life lesson.

“She uses her powers for good.”

Ashley, Lucy & Lisa — The Core Crew: School, Netball, Chaos, and Forever-Laughs

This is a joint message from Ashley, Lucy, and Lisa — Dani’s long-time school friends and part of her original inner circle. These are the people who knew her in the “formed in the fire” years: school, netball, sleepovers, buses, teenage rites of passage, and the shared mythology of growing up together.

They rewind to how the group formed: school connections that solidified through netball, shared classes, early sleepovers, ice skating, and school-bus hierarchy on the double-decker. The tone is affectionate and chaotic — because the memories are. They end looking forward, imagining themselves still doing friendship in their 60s, making memories on random midweek days when life finally slows down again.

“We adore you — you’re a huge part of our lives, and we love you to death.”

Birthday Montage — The Chorus of Love and Chaos

This is the “many voices” episode: a fast-moving montage of hellos, birthday wishes, in-jokes, and favourite memories from across Dani’s worlds — family (including Grace and Jude), in-laws, school friends, university friends, and the people who’ve collected around her over the years.

The overall effect is a chorus: many different people describing the same core signal — Dani as a person who shows up, makes life funnier, and leaves people better than she found them.

“You’ve got so many people to show up for you — why not have a big party and make the memories?”

John — A Love Letter, Spoken Out Loud

John reflects on how they met, the early spark, the laughter, the shared madness, and the life they chose together. He speaks openly about the last two years — the highs and the very real lows — and how Dani’s strength, belief, and steadiness made it possible to get through them. It’s a recognition of marriage as it truly is: not just joy and adventure, but commitment, patience, and staying when things are hardest.

He talks about their children, the safety and love Dani has given them, the home she’s held together, and the future they now get to look forward to — small moments, big adventures, and living fully while health and energy allow. Above all, it’s gratitude: for her love, her belief, and the life they’re building together.

“When I said ‘I do’, I meant it — through thick and thin. I love you.”

From John

I hope you love the podcast series. I love you, Dani.
